Our Impact in the 2023 Elections

The Big Picture

Just as we saw each year from 2018-2022, youth organizers, across race and place, rose to the challenge of mobilizing young people to vote for pro-democracy candidates in 2023.

While Blue Future is encouraged by the role we played to turnout young voters, more organizing is necessary!

In Wisconsin, Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio, young voters, especially women, LGBTQ+ youth, and young people of color, turned out to protect reproductive freedom and elect decision-makers who will champion a future rooted in justice, freedom, and equity for all.

In addition to this electoral work, Blue Future celebrated 5 years, joined new coalitions, and built various volunteer teams and programs to expand our impact.

The Details

Wisconsin State Supreme Court Election — Organize for Democracy Youth Organizing Training program

  • Paid and trained 23 youth organizers, 69% women, 50% identified as LGBTQIA+, and 74% from BIPOC communities.
  • Made 26,000 calls to young voters across the state.
  • Worked in close collaboration with the Wisconsin Democratic Party and the Grassroots Democrats HQ.

Liberal judge Janet Protasiewicz won a seat on Wisconsin’s state Supreme Court, flipping the Court’s ideological majority. Her win over conservative former state Supreme Court Justice Dan Kelly will likely protect reproductive freedom in Wisconsin and impact redistricting in the state!

Virginia State Legislative Elections — Organize for Democracy Youth Organizing Training program

  • Paid and trained 52 youth organizers, 52% women, 35% identified as LGBTQIA+, 82% from BIPOC communities.
  • Made 373,000 calls to young voters across the state.
  • Worked in close collaboration with the Grassroots Democrats HQ, Voters of Tomorrow, Clint Jenkins for State Senate (SD-17) and Russet Perry for State Senate (SD-31).
  • Hosted weekly beginner phonebank trainings to reach first time volunteers for ten weeks.

Virginia Democrats, who campaigned on protecting abortion rights, swept the legislative elections, retaking full control of the General Assembly and maintaining control of the Senate.

The outcome was a sharp loss for Gov. Glenn Youngkin and his fellow Republicans, who exerted energy, money, and political capital on their effort to secure a GOP trifecta.
